Activ RallySport are one of Australia's highest profile rally teams, with a string of event and championship successes to their name - culminating with victory in the 2011 Bosch Australian Rally Championship.
2011 has been their most successful season to date, with Justin Dowel and Matt Lee taking a ground-breaking debut victory in the South Australian round of the Bosch Australian Rally Championship.
The result has confirmed their status as the leading team in the 2011 ARC, but like most rally drivers, Dowel had to work his way to the top of the sport.
He started his rallying in a Datsun 1600, competing in novice and
club level rallies, before progressing to a more powerful and
competitive Mazda RX7.
Joining up with experienced co-driver Matt Lee, Dowel progressed to a
four-wheel drive Toyota Celica GT4, achieving top five results and a
state level class championship.
Further updates into an ex-Asia-Pacific class winning Mitsubishi Lancer
Evolution 6.5, and later an Evolution IX, saw instant success with the
team winning three consecutive Victorian Rally Championships in the
following years.
With a constant drive to achieve results, the team have worked with an
ex-Mitsubishi works rally team mechanic, a ‘Konica’ V8 Supercar winning
team manager, and then in 2006 engaged the services of John Down – an
ex-WRC and F1 engineer. Together with their ever-reliable service crew,
the team set about working toward achieving results in the Australian
Rally Championship.
After success at state level, 2008 saw Activ RallySport progress to the
ARC, securing two out of three class championships, culminating in a
career best third outright at the 2010 Rally Victoria..
However, it has been 2011 that has seen them rise to a new level. A heat
win in round two of the championship in Queensland moved them to third
in the ARC title race, while a pair of heat victories at Scouts Rally SA
in August propelled them to the championship lead with two rounds
remaining.
With their first Australian Rally Championship title within reach,
Justin Dowel and Matt Lee are focussed on achieving the ultimate goal.
