 Activ RallySport have been involved in the sport of car rallying for over 16 years, with significant success throughout that time.
Like most club rallyists, the team started off in a Datsun 1600, competing in novice and club level rallying before progressing to a more powerful and competitive Mazda RX7.
As the skills of team driver, Justin Dowel, progressed, he joined co-driver Matt Lee, and the progression was made to outright contention in a 4WD turbo Toyota Celica GT4, achieving top five results and a state level class championship.
Further updates into an ex-Asia-Pacific class winning Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6.5, and later an Evolution IX, saw instant success with the team winning three consecutive Victorian Rally Championships in the following years.
With a constant drive to achieve results, the team have worked with
an ex-Mitsubishi works rally team mechanic, a ‘Konica’ V8 Supercar
winning team manager, and then in 2006 engaged the services of John
Down – an ex-WRC and F1 engineer. Together with their ever-reliable
service crew, the team set about working toward achieving results in
the Australian Rally Championship.
To date this has netted the team with a class win in its first full
time year in the ARC, and 2009 sees the team striving for a podium
finish.
Rallying is an extremely competitive sport with rapid growth and
recognition throughout the community. Increased television coverage via
Channel Ten has increased awareness of the sport to a new level.
With a World Rally Championship round returning to Australia in 2009,
there will be a worldwide audience and the excitement of rallying will
reach new heights.
